Homemade Caramel Apples

imageThis homemade caramel sauce takes just a few minutes to make and only 5 ingredients. As far as tackiness goes for caramel apples it wont stick as smooth and thick as store bought caramels but the taste is amazing. Just pour over the top of your apples, top with coconut flakes, nuts, chocolate chips or melted dark chocolate, sprinkles or your other favorite caramel apple toppings. Make sure to refrigerator your apples after decorating so your toppings stick even better.  Use it also for sundaes, apple nachos, or just as a dip for apples, pears and other fruit.

Ingredients for Homemade Caramel:

  • 1 stick of butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt

Directions:

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.  Add in the brown sugar and stir constantly for 1 minute.  Mix in the heavy cream and continue to stir for 2 more minutes.  Remove pan from heat and stir in vanilla and sea salt.  Pour into mason jars and allow to cool completely.  The caramel will thicken over time and while cooling.  Refrigeration will also help to thicken.  Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
